When I started my licensing agency two decades ago When I started my licensing agency two decades ago I knew zero about business, I had zero contacts in the design industry and product categories that I wanted to license. What I did have was my passion for my work and a great pitch. I knew how my unique skills would fit in and benefit my audience. I made some assumptions about what was important to them and what they valued. I found a way to appeal to those values. And last but not least, I branded myself and my story in a visually compelling way that demonstrated what I was capable of. And then I went for it. I reached out to my literal dream clients and they hired me on the spot (and then I scrambled to form an LLC and find a lawyer to draft the contract). Once I nailed my pitch I figured out the rest of what I needed to know. The right info came to me at the right time. I also made a lot of mistakes, but don’t get me started. That’s how we grow.
If you want to jumpstart your licensing journey, you need to get out there. Make a list of your dream companies and pull together your pitch. What is holding you back? I created my new course Mastering the Pitch to help you spin your own story, to understand what is most important to your audience, help you highlight the best of what you have to offer, and do so in a way that appeals to your ideal partners. Right now, for $373 you can get access to all of my tips on creating a great pitch, see the actual presentations I use, the actual Canva templates and thoughtful exercises to help you position your unique opportunity. For a limited time at this price, you also get 6 hours of bonus presentation reviews and an invite to a Zoom Pitch Party where you can present your pitch. If you are dreaming of seeing you designs in retail shelves and you are looking for a solution to help you fire off those emails with confidence, I encourage you to take advantage of this limited offer. I’m back doing the lives again and it feels grea I’m back doing the lives again and it feels great. @leslietrimbach joined me today to share her story of how she made the leap from being a freelance artist to landing a licensing agent. Leslie is now focusing on licensing full time and on her way to building a brand and all of the royalties that come with it. If you want to see Leslie’s portfolio and how it landed a top art licensing agent in record time it is in my new course Mastering the Pitch (link in bio). I hope this inspires you all to just go for it.
Am I entering my licensed product review era? I bo Am I entering my licensed product review era? I bought this holiday menorah from the @jungalow line for @target. I’m blown away by the quality and the design for the price point. This $25 menorah is just as stylish and nice as the $200+ ones I’ve seen out there. One of the reasons why I love being in the licensing business, and particularly the designer brand niche, is seeing how stores like Target use licenses with designers to bring in new looks that may otherwise be considered too “bold” or “high design” for their guests. I’m here to break down and share how this business works, and also want to share what motivates and inspires me. I give this licensed product a 10/10.
For the past few months, we have been working on p For the past few months, we have been working on portfolio reviews in Licensing for Creators. I’m continually being asked “How much art do I need to have in order to license?” or “How many pages should I include in my presentation?”. I always struggle to answer those questions and it dawned on me that it’s because it’s actually the wrong question. I thought I’d share my perspective on this. Creating a great portfolio and presentation is something we will continue to work on in the group, with a focus on the story and the purpose behind your work that will make you stand out.
An important reminder that, when it comes to licen An important reminder that, when it comes to licensing lately, it’s always a good idea to think outside of the box. As more consumers invest in knowledge and experiences, like retreats and classes, this is a great opportunity for artists and creators to shine.
