Am I entering my licensed product review era? I bo Am I entering my licensed product review era? I bought this holiday menorah from the @jungalow line for @target. I’m blown away by the quality and the design for the price point. This $25 menorah is just as stylish and nice as the $200+ ones I’ve seen out there. One of the reasons why I love being in the licensing business, and particularly the designer brand niche, is seeing how stores like Target use licenses with designers to bring in new looks that may otherwise be considered too “bold” or “high design” for their guests. I’m here to break down and share how this business works, and also want to share what motivates and inspires me. I give this licensed product a 10/10.

When a licensing partner is making choices about using your art and designs on products, sometimes they make very specific choices based on what their retail buyers like, what’s trending, what sells. At other times, not as much thought or insight goes into it. If you see a product concept or sample that looks off to you, speak up. I’m a big believer in asking questions and finding a constructive way to get to a place of yes. Not only will you come up with a design solution that works for everyone, you will also learn a lot in the process.

I’m continually being asked “How much art do I need to have in order to license?” or “How many pages should I include in my presentation?”. I always struggle to answer those questions and it dawned on me that it’s because it’s actually the wrong question. I thought I’d share my perspective on this. Creating a great portfolio and presentation is something we will continue to work on in the group, with a focus on the story and the purpose behind your work that will make you stand out.

As more consumers invest in knowledge and experiences, like retreats and classes, this is a great opportunity for artists and creators to shine.
